In Colombia's Pacific Coast, the guasá is a traditional shaker instrument central to currulao and the marimba de chonta tradition that inspires much of the Nonet's repertoire. Made from guadua, achira seeds, and chonta sticks, all sourced from the Colombian Pacific rainforest, its rhythmic shake carries the pulse of water through the music while anchoring the rhythm. Your support goes directly to sustaining the builders' craft and this tradition.

Fund a full concert-workshop presentation by a Dan Neville-led ensemble, bringing live music directly to students and community members. For many, this will be their first time hearing this music performed live, or their first time engaging with jazz and Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast traditions at all. It's a chance to spark curiosity, build confidence, and open doors, especially for students in under-resourced schools and immigrant communities where access to live performance and hands-on musical education isn't guaranteed.
You can choose the school or community group yourself, or let Dan select one through his network across North Jersey, Philadelphia, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Connecticut. Who's on the album?
Ari Hoenig, Armando Quiñones, Xiomara Torres, Alex Norris, Geoff Burke, Justin Flynn, Carl Maraghi, Alex Pastrana, Trifon Dimitrov, and Dan Neville with special guest Alejandro Flores.
Is it all instrumental?
About 70% instrumental, with featured vocals from Latin Grammy winner Xiomara Torres.
Is it jazz?
It's influenced by jazz, compositionally, harmonically, and in its balance of improvisation and written material. But it's just as deeply rooted in the folkloric music of Colombia's Pacific Coast, giving it a character and feel distinct from jazz or Latin jazz as usually defined. It's a genuinely one-of-a-kind, innovative project.
Is there any institutional backing behind this project?
Yes. A grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation is covering our October recording session, including musician fees, studio time, rehearsals, transportation, and mixing and mastering. This campaign is to fund the rest of what it takes to get the album released on time.
Is this a crowdfunding campaign?
Kind of. This is a personal page, so there's no company taking a cut, everything raised goes directly toward the project. It's also not all-or-nothing: if we don't hit our goal, we'll find a way to make it happen regardless.
Where does my money go?
CD, vinyl, and book manufacturing, publicity, radio, social media, album artwork, and general operating expenses to keep the Nonet performing sustainably.
When will rewards ship?
On or before May 2027.
